Astronomers were able to observe an unusual astronomical occurrence involving a star located in the Andromeda Galaxy. Unlike other stars that result in supernovae in the end, this huge star, called M31-2014-DS1, disappeared into a black hole silently, giving astronomers new insights into the death of stars. Scientists could study and observe this phenomenon with the help of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Near-Earth Object Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) mission and other telescopes. This is the most detailed proof of the process that astronomers have gathered, which will also shed light on the formation of black holes.

DID YOU KNOW?
The mass of the biggest black holes, known as supermassive black holes, is more than one million times that of the sun!
