Conservationists have reintroduced giant tortoises in Floreana, a Galapagos island, signalling a promising move in enhancing the island’s biodiversity. This initiative was carried out by the Galapagos National Park Directorate along with other conservation groups under the Floreana Restoration Ecological Project. The tortoises, which became extinct on the island due to hunting by sailors, have now been brought back to the island after around two centuries. Scientists bred tortoises they found on another island, which were genetically similar to the extinct tortoises. More than 150 of the tortoises from the breeding initiative were released on Floreana Island.
