Scientists at Pennsylvania State University, USA, have created adaptable skin that can react to environmental stimuli. Developed from hydrogel, this smart skin is programmed to react to external elements such as solvents or heat, which causes the skin to change its surface. The technology draws inspiration from octopuses, who change their skin texture and colour in response to their environment, including predators. The smart skin is very flexible, allowing it to easily change shape, form and texture. According to scientists, this innovation has potential applications in fields such as biomedicine and soft robotics.

DID YOU KNOW?
Octopuses have special skin cells on their body known as chromatophores. These cells comprise pigments, which help the creatures change their skin colour.
