Nauru, a country located in the Pacific Ocean, is officially going to be referred to as the Republic of Naoero, the country’s traditional name. The name Nauru, pronounced ‘now-roo’, was adopted by European colonisers as it was easier to pronounce in comparison with the country’s traditional name. According to government officials, the name change intends to bolster the country’s culture, identity and heritage. This name change also brings about a change in its international code—from NRU to NRO.
