Antonio Guterres, the United Nations (UN) secretary-general, made a historic visit to Syria during which he met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa as well as other Syrian officials. Guterres’ visit made him the first UN chief to officially visit the country since 2009. His talks with Syrian officials revolved around rebuilding Syria after the civil war that commenced in 2011, leading to extensive damage and loss of lives, and the effects of former President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which ended about two years ago. Guterres promised support to the country as it attempts to revive and restore stability. He also called for international backing.
