In a major milestone, six women have won the 2026 Goldman Environmental Prize, a prestigious award that recognises the efforts of activists across the globe towards the environment. This annual award, conferred by the Goldman Environmental Foundation, commends the work of six or sometimes seven activists from the six inhabited regions of the world, including Asia, Europe and Africa. This is the first time since the prize’s establishment that it has been awarded to an entirely female cohort, highlighting the role of women in leading transformative initiatives. Among the winners is Iroro Tanshi from Nigeria, who has been honoured for her efforts towards protecting short-tailed roundleaf bats from wildfires caused by humans, and Yuvelis Morales Blanco from Colombia, who opposed commercial fracking for oil in her country.
