Sikkim is taking protective steps to track glacial lakes and increase preparedness for glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) following Nepal’s deadly flash floods.
The Government of Sikkim, along with the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority, is working to mitigate the effects of GLOFs through data collection as well as the deployment of technology.
16 glacial lakes in Sikkim have been classified as highly vulnerable. Equipment such as automated weather stations and sensors have been installed in most lakes to notify authorities of lake levels and other irregularities.
The state’s mitigation strategy is expected to improve warning and evacuation with climate-related disasters on the rise.
