The Government of India has planned to enable the trading of major minerals on an exchange, which is expected to significantly enhance India’s mineral sector. Trading on the system is set to begin from the next financial year, with minerals such as limestone, iron ore, bauxite and manganese covered in the beginning. The Indian Bureau of Mines will be the regulator of the platform, monitoring its functioning. Trading on the system will take place through an electronic platform that is centralised. Through this mechanism, the government intends to ensure better pricing, create a fair marketplace and facilitate transparency in the mineral sector.
