- Snakebites have been declared a notifiable disease by the Maharashtra government, a move that aims to decrease fatalities and improve the management of snakebites, including snakebite prevention and appropriate treatment of snakebites.
- Based on the government’s notification, healthcare practitioners and medical establishments such as medical colleges and hospitals are mandated to report snakebites and even deaths from them to the concerned authorities.
- This step aims to ensure efficient stock management and timely access to anti-snake venom (ASV), which is used to treat snakebites.
- It will also help officials collect vital snakebite-related information, especially from rural areas.
