  • Based on a directive by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, dogs that retire from the police force in the state will continue living with the police department instead of being given up for adoption.
  • Police dogs are trained when they are young and assist the police with a variety of tasks, including rescue efforts and locating criminals. Their service in the force usually spans 10 years, during which they grow close to their police handlers.
  • The change aims to address the psychological distress retired service dogs experience after having to part from their long-time handlers.
  • It also ensures that the dogs are financially supported by the Maharashtra Home Department.
