A former nurse named Sarah Mullally was installed as Archbishop of Canterbury on March 25, etching her name in history as the first female to head the Church of England. In her new position, Mullally also serves as the ceremonial leader of the Anglican community, a Christian community comprising millions of members around the world. Mullally’s appointment is considered pathbreaking as the 64-year-old is the first woman in over 1,400 years to serve in this post, reflecting a major social and cultural transformation. Mullally, whose ordination as a priest took place in 2002, is the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury. Becoming the first female Bishop of London in 2018 marked another important milestone in Mullally’s religious journey.
