India has appointed experienced politician Dinesh Trivedi as India’s high commissioner to Bangladesh in a strategic effort to enhance ties between Bangladesh and India. Trivedi, who has been associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has also been part of the Trinamool Congress and Congress in the past. He has also served in various capacities, including union minister of railways, during his political career. As diplomats are normally chosen for this role, the appointment of Trivedi, who is a politician, to the post is considered rare. However, Trivedi’s significant experience in politics is expected to boost relations between Bangladesh and India, which have witnessed tensions and complications over the years.
