  • INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, was commissioned into the Indian Navy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a ceremony held at the Cochin Shipyard, Kerala, on September 2.
  • This warship is 262mts long and 62mts wide. It can accommodate 30 aircraft and 1,600 crewmembers on board.
  • The ship can reach a maximum speed of 28 knots and has an endurance of 7,500 nautical miles.
  • Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, Kerala, it is equipped with a kitchen, a medical unit with 16 beds, a radiology wing, an operation theatre, a dental unit and many other facilities.
  • This `20,000 crore warship will be the seventh largest aircraft carrier in the world when fully loaded, the largest being the US Navy’s USS Gerald R Ford Class (CVN-78).
