- Researchers from the Mushrooms of India Community and the Kasaragod division of the Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department discovered rare bioluminescent mushrooms in Kerala’s Kasaragod forests.
- The mushrooms, known as Filoboletus manipularis, let out a spectacular green light in the night and were among more than 50 mushroom species found by the researchers.
- According to researchers, a chemical reaction in the mushroom’s cells causes them to become bioluminescent. The green light is a result of the reaction of oxygen with luciferase and luciferin.
- Researchers believe the mushrooms could be toxic and have warned people against consuming them.
- These mushrooms thrive in decaying organic matter.
