Every day, you encounter numerous situations that trigger a range of emotions. Some experiences might make you happy, some might leave you feeling neutral, while others might evoke feelings of sadness, frustration or shame. Negative emotions are often difficult to share. However, keeping such feelings inside for long can make your mind and body feel heavy and uneasy. According to experts, ignored emotions do not vanish. They can slowly accumulate, causing anxiety, depression and other mental as well as physical issues in the long run.

That is why paying attention to your emotions every day is essential. If you are upset about an argument with a friend, try to recognise your feelings and speak to your parent or a trusted adult about it before the day ends. Do this every day. Expressing your feelings can help your mind feel lighter before the next day begins.

Learning to sit with uncomfortable feelings rather than instantly distracting yourself is also important. Many children play games, listen to loud music, watch television or sleep to distract themselves from distressing thoughts. Engaging in such activities can help you feel better for some time; however, the negative emotions can stay hidden inside and eventually flow into other areas of your life.

When you face your feelings, you learn to name, process and healthily manage them, rather than resist them. Doing this on an everyday basis will prevent you from bottling up your emotions and letting them move to the next day. It will give you a fresh start and help you feel mentally and physically calmer every morning, helping you start every day with a fresh and happy perspective on life.
