Every year on Teachers’ Day, we celebrate the people who stand at the front of our classrooms. They explain difficult concepts, answer endless questions, cheer us on when we succeed and encourage us when we lose hope. Long after we have forgotten a chapter or a formula, we often remember the teacher who believed in us.
But here’s something worth thinking about. Not everyone who teaches stands in front of a blackboard. Sometimes, a younger sibling teaches us patience. A grandparent shows us how to grow a plant, a friend teaches us how to ride a bicycle or a child shows an adult how to use new technology. Every day, you will meet someone who knows something you don’t.
What’s more, the world has a funny way of teaching us. Sometimes, our biggest lessons come from success. More often, they come from mistakes, disappointment and trying again. Every conversation, every journey, every book and every person has the potential to leave us a little wiser than before.
Age doesn’t decide who can teach. Curiosity decides who can learn.
Some of the smartest people in the world have one thing in common. They never believe they know everything. They ask questions. They listen carefully. They change their minds when they discover something new. They remain students, even after becoming scientists, artists, doctors, athletes or teachers themselves.
Today, make a quiet promise to yourself: never stop learning. Never stop being a student.
