A group of researchers headed by University College Dublin, Ireland, has conducted a study on the history of the sheeppox virus (SPPV), which has seriously affected sheep populations, especially in Greece, over the past years. Researchers found sheeppox virus DNA in parchment in historic manuscripts and documents. The parchment, made from livestock hides (animal skin) hundreds of years ago, is providing insights into the evolution of the virus. Additionally, the DNA from sheep teeth from the Bronze Age was also studied. Based on the information, the virus is believed to be more than 3,700 years old. Researchers believe studying past virus outbreaks has the potential to improve future disease management.
