The Tulu language has been given the additional official language status in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts by the Karnataka government, recognising its use and cultural significance in the region.
The decision to make the ancient Dravidian language the state’s second additional administrative language in the districts was taken at a cabinet meeting held in Mangaluru in September and announced by Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.
Demands for renaming the Dakshina Kannada district were also discussed.
Tulu is spoken by many people in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi and according to Shivakumar, giving it official recognition meets the demands of locals in the region.
