How to Ace Your Exam

Exams are an important part of the education system as they help educators evaluate students’ learning abilities and knowledge and establish teaching methods that support students. Exams also help students measure their progress and attain skills such as organisation and time management. With exams around the corner, SCARLETT RODRIGUES asked a few RobinAgers how they prepare for their exams and tackle exam-related stress, if any. Here’s what they had to say.

Class 10, Tatva Global School, Hyderabad

I prepare a revision plan based on my preparedness. My first priority is subjects or chapters I am weak in and that require practice; the second is chapters where I need to only brush up; and the third is chapters I am wellversed in. Rather than passive study, I pay more attention to active recall. Practising Feynman’s technique–where I learn concepts more effectively by teaching them to another person, such as my mother or sister–is very helpful. Throughout my preparation, I ensure that I care for my health. I sleep on time and wake up early. One should tailor their preparation methods and plan based on what helps them best.

Class 8, American Eduglobal School, Ghaziabad

I prepare a timetable based on the difficulty level of subjects. I dedicate more time to subjects I find challenging, like maths. If doubts arise, I clear them right away by asking my friends and teachers. I ensure I practise subjects like science and maths often. I use the mind mapping technique, make charts and focus on important questions suggested by teachers to prepare effectively. Getting seven to eight hours of sleep and consuming foods like green vegetables and pulses helps me feel fit. If I feel stressed, I write my feelings down in my diary, which helps me clear my mind.

Mohammad Alfiya Mehjabeen
Class 7, Tatva Global School, Hyderabad

I deal with exam-related anxiety using certain effective techniques. I use the ‘5-4-3-2-1’ technique, which involves paying attention to five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste. This helps me decrease overthinking and gain clarity. Another technique I use is the ‘1-2-4-7’ rule, which involves reading the lesson once and then revising it on the second, fourth and seventh day, which helps it stay in my memory for long. I sometimes engage in discussions with my family during study breaks to take my mind off my studies. I also set targets while studying and writing exams, so that I finish things on time.

Riddhit Basu
Class 6, Greenwood High International School, Bengaluru

I revise my portion continuously, so there’s not much pressure towards the exam. Making quick notes as teachers teach ensures I have important points handy. I feel paying attention in class helps significantly, as having concepts clear from the beginning decreases the need for memorisation. Additionally, I try to make acronyms to recollect some concepts. I try to stay calm during my exams by taking breaks between study sessions. If I’m tense, I speak to my parents, who motivate me.

Tanay Paun
Class 5, Kapol Vidyanidhi International School, Mumbai

I am mostly relaxed during my exams as I always ensure I am prepared in advance. I do not compromise on food, sleep or entertainment. I think maintaining a balance between work and recreation is important to ensure good performance. I take deep breaths and try to clear my mind before study sessions to ensure better focus. I mostly engage in self-study and read my textbooks well, so I am prepared to answer questions from within the chapters. If nervousness creeps in, speaking to my mother helps me feel better instantly.

Aditya Dave
Class 4, Prakash Higher Secondary School, Ahmedabad

Doing breathing exercises and eating healthy food such as broccoli, tomatoes and nuts decreases stress during exams. I complement my textbook learning with digital learning, which helps me recollect my lessons more effectively. I also ask myself questions and set papers for myself to help me recall lessons. Then, if I get anything wrong, I revise the concept or lesson. I take short playing breaks, which helps me refresh my mind. I adjust my sleep and schedule based on my exams. I focus on keeping my mind relaxed, as too much stress could make one forget things.
