A new law passed by the Chinese government has made Mandarin language compulsory as the basic language in government affairs and across schools, drawing mixed reactions from citizens and experts. While the government believes this move will enhance unity and employment opportunities, people worry that the law could lead to the traditions, languages and cultures of minority groups being over powered. China comprises numerous minority groups with unique cultures, who fear the law might threaten their identity.
