A repository that is specially designed for the disposal of nuclear waste is set to commence operations in Finland soon. The facility, called Onkalo, includes features that minimise environmental impact, enabling the storage of spent nuclear fuel 430mts underground, away from humans, for 1,00,000 years. The waste disposal procedure involves keeping the radioactive material in copper canisters that are resistant to corrosion. These canisters are inserted in holes created within bedrock dating back 1.9 billion years. Bentonite clay is then placed around the canisters. Experts believe the robust safety procedures, including the sealing of the disposal tunnels, will ensure that the nuclear waste does not affect groundwater and offers a more efficient waste management option than current methods.
