- Whatsapp threatened the Indian government that it would leave the Indian market if it was compelled to break the encryption of calls and messages on its platform.
- WhatsApp and its parent company Meta challenged a rule announced by the Indian government in 2021, which makes it obligatory for social media platforms to trace the originator of a message if instructed to do so by a court.
- According to WhatsApp, its end-to-end encryption protects the exchange of information between its users and breaking encryption would violate their privacy.
- The government, on the other hand, introduced this rule to create a secure cyberspace and ensure national security. The case will be heard by the Delhi High Court in August.
