Scientists at the University of British Columbia, Canada, have discovered that raccoons solve puzzles out of curiosity, showing the creatures’ ability to make decisions and look for solutions. In an experiment, scientists were surprised to find that raccoons, driven by curiosity, carried on finding ways to solve puzzles, though there were no more treats or rewards as incentives. The experiment also showed that their behaviour was influenced by the difficulty level of the puzzle. The study has given scientists insights into the creatures’ cognitive abilities.
