Ajay Sood, a professor in the department of physics at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, has been appointed as principal scientific adviser (PSA) to the Government of India. He succeeded famous biologist K VijayRaghavan and will serve as PSA for a period of three years. The PSA’s office advises the prime minister and cabinet on issues related to technology, innovation and science. Sood is well-known for his research in the areas of soft condensed matter and quantum materials. He worked as a scientist at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, and also did post-doctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, Germany. Sood has received multiple awards for his achievements including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the Third World Academy of Sciences Award in Physics and the Padma Shri. In 2015, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
