Train Your Body & Mind

Yoga is a vital part of India’s cultural heritage and has been embraced by people of many nationalities. It originated in ancient India thousands of years ago and is now practised worldwide. Yoga includes breathing techniques, meditation and asanas (poses) that aim to connect the body, mind and spirit. The practice promotes peace of mind, agility and overall well-being. Since 2015, June 21 has been observed annually as the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA to recognise yoga’s role across the globe. To mark the occasion, SCARLETT RODRIGUES asked a few RobinAgers how yoga has helped them. Here’s what they had to say.

Adhyan Maheshwari
Class 9, American EduGlobal School, Ghaziabad

Yoga energises me and improves my flexibility, keeping my body fit and boosting blood circulation. It also helps build stamina and reduces tiredness. I practise Vrikshasana and Padmasana, which improve posture. Balasana helps the body feel relaxed. I also use yoga stretches that may help increase height. Focussing on breathing and doing yoga poses helps me feel less stressed. Yoga has brought me peace. Once, when I was stressed about completing my homework, I meditated for half an hour and felt relaxed. This gradually relieved my headache too.

After I learned yoga and practised it for a few months, I noticed a significant improvement in my focus and concentration. I began feeling relaxed, which helped me clear my mind. This practice has directly reflected in my studies. As a teenager, I often experience mood swings, but yoga keeps me calm and helps me manage them effectively. Yoga has made my body flexible, fit and strong. Additionally, it has improved my running performance.

Class 9, EuroSchool Balkum, Thane

Yoga has benefitted me both physically and mentally. Physically, it has made me strong, agile and energetic. Mentally, it has instilled calmness and confidence and enhanced my focus. Practising the 12 asanas of Surya Namaskar improves my concentration. In the busy life of school, academics and peer competition, yoga helps me stay composed. Being in class 9 requires attentiveness and organisation and yoga helps me achieve that. It allows me to navigate the day easily and keeps me productive and joyful. Making yoga part of my routine has helped me reach my full potential.

Mihika Sharma
Class 8, Home Schooler, Bhopal

Apart from keeping the body fit and providing health benefits, yoga enhances our reflexes. I enjoy doing asanas such as the butterfly pose (Baddha Konasana) and Surya Namaskar. Yoga has made me mentally and physically stronger. It has sharpened my mind and improved my focus. I have learned to find peace even amid a busy schedule. I often sit quietly, taking deep breaths, enjoying silence and sometimes, calming music. Additionally, yoga has improved my agility and helped me develop a healthy physique.

Ruhika Sahu
Class 7, Dhruv Global School, Pune

Earlier, I found it difficult to maintain focus while studying. Practising meditation has significantly boosted my concentration. I do yoga poses such as the bridge pose (Setu Bandhasana), cat pose (Marjaryasana), camel pose (Bitilasana) and tree pose (Vrikshasana) twice a week. Recently, yoga even helped relieve my back pain. It improved my posture, made me more flexible and contributed to a positive mindset. It supports both my mental health and physical strength and I want to continue practising it more often. As I am in class 7, my schoolwork has increased, but yoga helps me cope with stress and manage my emotions. I believe that other children should also practise yoga regularly because it keeps us fit, reduces pain and helps us achieve our goals with better focus.

Jihan Rambhia
Class 5, Kapol Vidyanidhi International School, Mumbai

I often practise meditation because it helps me stay calm and regulate my emotions. Once, I was upset when my mother shouted at me, but practising meditation helped me calm down and feel better. In another instance, I was stressed about my social studies exam and meditating and deep breathing exercises helped me manage my stress and recall everything I had studied. Also, practising Surya Namaskar and asanas like Trikonasana and Padmasana helps refresh me.
