Every year on Independence Day, we celebrate the moment India became free.

Every year on Independence Day, we celebrate the moment India became free. Flags are hoisted, patriotic songs fill the air and we remember the people who gave up comfort, careers and, in many cases, even their lives so that future generations could grow up in an independent country.

But here is an interesting question we rarely ask ourselves. What exactly is freedom? Most of us would probably say it means being able to make our own choices. We are free to study what interests us, play the sports we enjoy, practise our religion, speak our minds and dream about the future we want. But we forget that other people are free too.

Think about a classroom where everyone decides to speak at once. Or a neighbourhood where people play loud music late into the night because nobody can stop them. Or on the internet, where a careless rumour can spread to thousands of people within minutes. In each case, someone may be exercising their freedom, but at the cost of somebody else’s peace, safety or dignity.

Freedom has never meant simply doing whatever we please. It has always come with responsibility.

The leaders of India’s freedom movement understood this well. They wanted a country where people could govern themselves. But self-government is possible only when citizens are willing to show self-control. Following rules, respecting differences, protecting public spaces and thinking before we act are all small ways of protecting the freedom that others fought so hard to win.

Perhaps that is why Independence Day is not only about looking back at history. It is also about looking at ourselves. With every choice we make, we should be asking ourselves one question—will this make life better only for me, or for everyone around me too? That may be one of the most important freedoms of all—the freedom to choose wisely.
