A 1995 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer named Ashwini Bhide has broken new ground with her appointment as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) municipal commissioner. Bhide, who succeeded Bhushan Gagrani, is the first woman to serve in this capacity in the 160-year history of the civic body. Prior to her new position, Bhide worked as an additional chief secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office and also has experience working as additional municipal commissioner. She is well-known for leading significant infrastructure initiatives, including the Mumbai Coastal Road project and an underground metro line. In her new role, 55-year-old Bhide will head the city’s civic administration, manage important infrastructure initiatives and tackle several other matters.
