92-year-old legendary singer Asha Bhosle, one of the rare artists whose voice became inseparable from the story of modern India, passed away on April 12. For more than eight decades, she sang across genres and languages–romantic melodies, ghazals, devotional songs, classical compositions and film music–making each style feel instinctively her own. She received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest honour in film, and the Padma Vibhushan, along with multiple Filmfare and National Awards. She also made history as the only Indian singer to receive a Grammy Award. She was given a farewell with full state honours.
