- The 2024 Candidates Tournament, a chess event organised by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), took place in Canada from April 3 to 22. 16 top international players including five Indians took part in the event.
- Dommaraju Gukesh, a 17-year-old grandmaster from India, became the youngest winner of the tournament after his final-round match against USA’s Hikaru Nakamura ended in a draw.
- This victory qualifies Gukesh to compete against China’s Ding Liren for the World Championship title later in 2024.
- Gukesh is only the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to emerge victorious in the tournament.
