Thanya Nathan C, a 24-year-old lawyer from Kannur district in Kerala, is set to become the state’s first visually challenged woman judge. She secured the top rank among candidates with benchmark disabilities in the Kerala High Court’s Civil Judge (Junior Division) examination, marking a significant milestone for representation in the judiciary. Blind since birth, Nathan was raised in Mangad and completed her early education at a Model School for the Blind before studying at Parassinikadavu High School and Morazha Government Higher Secondary School in Kannur district, Kerala. She decided to study law during her higher secondary years and later topped her LLB course at Kannur University as its only visually impaired student. After graduating, she practised as a junior lawyer using Braille notes and screen-reading software to prepare cases. Her experience includes both civil and criminal cases.
