A team of scientists, including scientists from Durham University, UK, has discovered a surprising geological structure under the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. According to scientists, the structure, shaped like a fan, comprises several subglacial basins and could help scientists better understand the geological history of Antarctica. Known features, like the Aurora Basin and the Wilkes Basin, are part of this huge structure. This newly discovered feature has been named the East Antarctic Fan-shaped Basin Province and scientists believe it formed due to the outward spreading of the Earth’s crust over time. Studying this structure is expected to provide scientists with insights into the movement of ice in Antarctica.
