Perils of Purity

Arundhati Agarwal, Class 7, Samashti International School, Hyderabad

A fire stirs within a house
A house devoid of sin and vice
The bricks sit firm, untouched by flame
But the embers glow in each crevice
The photos shrivel and fray away,
As people do, when strife gets in the way
In this house of no sin or vice,
Something awakens beneath the lies
In the kitchen lies the ghost of togetherness
Until even that gives to the dancing flames
Because in this house of no sin or vice
The fire pierced the unseen ties.
There was no voice, no cry of alarm
The house burned on, too quiet to be calm
It was in this house of no sin or vice,
That long ago, warmth had no price
The house lies on the brink of reverie
Ashes reviving a scorching memory
Whatever happened to this house that claimed no vice?
Now burning, but still cold as ice
