Marching Towards a Modern India

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi played a key role in India’s struggle for independence. His nonviolent protests, such as the Champaran Satyagraha and the Dandi March, united people to oppose injustice and bring about change peacefully. To mark GANDHI JAYANTI–the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi–on October 2, SCARLETT RODRIGUES spoke to a few RobinAgers and asked them what changes they would want to bring about in India if they were to organise a peaceful march like a modern-day Gandhi. Here’s what they had to say.

Through a peaceful march, I would call for a limit on the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Using AI to advance the nation’s progress is beneficial. However, becoming overly dependent on it could decrease people’s creativity and self-reliance. It will lead people in offices and schools to conveniently and mindlessly copy and paste rather than using their intellect. An unengaged mind could also lead people to participate in violence, negative practices and other chaotic activities. Through the march, I would urge citizens to curb their AI use and explore their untapped potential. I would encourage people to view AI as a collaborator rather than relying on it excessively. I would propose a ban on the overuse of AI to preserve people’s intellect and safeguard the peace of the country.

Through a peaceful march, I would underscore the importance of appropriate waste disposal and hygiene in public places. The increasing menace of garbage on streets and the lack of awareness about its appropriate disposal require attention. I would urge government authorities to set up more waste recycling plants and implement strict rules for the proper segregation and disposal of waste. I would raise awareness about repurposing plastic waste as decor and using wet waste as compost. I would also urge authorities to collect garbage on time. Additionally, I would request them to provide garbage collectors with better equipment to handle waste safely.

I would hold a march to encourage a stress-free and supportive educational environment. I would like to promote a system where students view failure as an opportunity to improve. Individuals should understand that effort and participation are more important than just winning. A system that adopts patience and understanding would decrease stress among students and make education an enjoyable experience. Educators could use technology to impart knowledge through captivating stories and practical projects. They could serve as wonderful coaches who make every subject feel like an adventure.

I would raise awareness and lead a march against food adulteration. Access to healthy and safe food is the right of every individual. In my opinion, serious action should be taken against companies and individuals who cheat the public by adulterating food for selfish money-making motives. I want authorities to enforce strict safety checks to eliminate concerns about fake ingredients and harmful substances used in food. Through a march, I would raise awareness about food quality and urge people to check the food they buy. I believe ensuring food safety is a significant step towards building a healthy India and we can peacefully unite to bring about this change.

I would like to head a movement that promotes internet safety, especially among students. The internet is a useful resource that helps children gain knowledge and develop skills. Additionally, it helps them make new friends. However, unhealthy, violent and hateful content should not be accessible to children. Children’s curiosity should not affect them negatively. My movement would focus on urging authorities to come up with strict measures to protect children in the digital space. Digital platforms should be responsible for online safety. Content should be regulated through tools such as parental controls and filters so that children can access appropriate material. If content is harmful, platforms should ensure it is removed immediately. Ensuring internet safety would help protect childhood.

I would lead a march to raise awareness about plastic waste. Many people throw plastic away carelessly. This has been affecting many creatures, from jellyfish to cows. These creatures unknowingly eat plastic, which can cause serious problems. Plastic often causes drains and water bodies to clog during the rains, which can give rise to more mosquitoes. Through a march, I would peacefully encourage people to use jute and paper bags and request authorities to set up more dustbins.

REFLECTION: New-age Gandhi

If you were a modern-day Gandhi and were leading a peaceful march, what message or mission would you want to promote?
