General Tso’s Tofu

This simple and wholesome tofu recipe is perfect for a weeknight dinner.

INGREDIENTS

  • 100 grams firm tofu
  • 3 spring onions, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for cooking
  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds, toasted

FOR THE TOFU MARINADE

  • 1 tablespoon soya sauce (or tamari sauce)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons corn starch
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon chilli garlic sauce
  • Salt to taste

FOR THE STIR FRY SAUCE 

  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon corn starch
  • 1 teaspoon minced ginger garlic
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon soya sauce
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar

METHOD 

  • Cut the tofu into cubes, pat them dry with a tissue and set them aside.
  • In a bowl, add all the ingredients for the marination, mix well and add the tofu. Keep it aside for 5 minutes.
  • Mix all the stir fry sauce ingredients in a bowl.
  • In a pan, add some oil and sauté the tofu well on all sides until the pieces become crisp. Take them out.
  • Add some more oil to the pan and toss in the spring onions. Add the stir fry sauce and let it cook for a bit.
  • Add the sautéed tofu and let everything cook together for 3 to 4 minutes or until the sauce thickens.
  • Sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds on top and serve with steamed rice or noodles.
