Inspired by the way manta rays swim, scientists at North Carolina State University, USA, have created soft robots that are capable of swimming at a speed that is approximately four times faster than the speed of similar robots developed previously. Known as ‘butterfly bots’, these robots weigh around 2.8 grams and possess a soft, silicone body with a pair of bistable flappable wings. Pressurised air helps the wings of the robot move, allowing the butterfly bot to swim fast.

Manta rays are among the largest creatures in the ocean and may have wingspans of 7ft and above.
