Scientists at Penn State University in the USA have developed a technique to convert used plastic bottles into synthetic graphite. Graphite is a key component of lithium-ion batteries, which power electric vehicles, laptops and mobile phones. At present, most graphite comes from mining. By turning waste plastic into battery-grade graphite, researchers hope to reduce both plastic pollution and the need to extract more natural graphite. Although the technology is still at its nascent stage, scientists believe it could help tackle two growing global challenges at the same time—finding better use for discarded plastic and meeting the rising demand for battery materials.
