Nature conservationist Krithi Karanth has been honoured with the 2026 Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year title in recognition of her contributions towards wildlife protection. The award honours the contributions of people who work towards safeguarding Earth and Karanth is the first Indian to receive it. Karanth is the chief executive officer (CEO) of a non-profit organisation called Centre for Wildlife Studies (CWS) that raises awareness about wildlife, undertakes research and focusses on preserving India’s wildlife. She has been engaged in conservation for about 30 years and her efforts involve educating people about wildlife and encouraging a harmonious relationship between animals and humans. Her journey also involves helping people receive compensation for destruction caused by wildlife and enhancing children’s understanding of wildlife through engaging methods such as art and stories.
