A designer named Sudheer Rajbhar has earned recognition for founding Chamar Studio, an initiative that uses recycled rubber to create a variety of items such as belts and bags. The beef ban that was imposed by the Maharashtra government in 2015 significantly affected the livelihood of the Chamar community, a community of leather workers. To support the community, Rajbhar found an alternate way of making products that were earlier made of leather, using recycled rubber. Chamar Studio employs different artisans including cobblers and its products have earned recognition from renowned personalities. Rajbhar aspired to be an artist during his childhood, however, he faced several caste-related obstacles. Through this initiative, he is hoping to transform society’s views on the caste system.
