A woman named Dasia Taylor from Iowa City in Iowa, USA, has created sutures (stitches) that show signs of infection through a change in colour. These sutures are made using cotton-polyester thread that has been dyed using beet extract, which can detect acidity in a surgical wound. When the pH level increases, indicating an infection, the sutures transform from purple to red in colour. Through this simple colour-change method, patients are able to identify infections at an early stage, preventing them from worsening. Dasia, whose efforts on this invention began in 2019, is a student at the University of Iowa, USA, and has won numerous accolades for her work.
