Yara, the world’s largest producer of fertilisers, is developing the world’s first zero-emissions, completely autonomous container ship. The 80mt-long vessel called Yara Birkeland will be fully electric and self-steering, which means there will be no need for fuel or a ship crew. Yara is intended to reduce carbon emissions by 1,000 tonnes per year by replacing 40,000 diesel-powered truck travels per year. The container ship will help to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in the area. Yara Birkeland has been referred to as ‘The Tesla of the Seas’ by the Wall Street Journal. It made its maiden voyage with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stør through the Oslo Fjord in Norway.
