The world’s largest floating offshore wind farm called Hywind Tampen was launched in August by a Norwegian energy company called Equinor and its partners. The wind farm, which is situated about 140kms off the coast of Norway, employs a new technology that includes 11 wind turbines attached to a floating base that is fixed to the seafloor. It is operated by Equinor and has begun functioning at its full capacity, which is 88 MW, supplying electricity to five oil and gas platforms in the North Sea. It is estimated that Hywind Tampen will meet approximately 35% of the annual electricity power demand of the oil and gas platforms and will reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by around 2,00,000 tonnes annually.
