Scientists have drilled a 1,268mt-deep hole close to Atlantis Massif, an under4water massif located in the North Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantis Massif is an area on the seafloor where the mantle, the layer of Earth that contributes to around 84% of its volume, is exposed. Scientists believe that studying the composition of mantle rocks will provide them with clues about the formation of the Earth and the origin of life on the planet. They managed to extract mantle rocks from the region by drilling a deep hole in the seafloor with the help of an ocean drilling vessel.

The Earth’s mantle has a thickness of approximately 2,900kms.
