Abir Al-Sahlani, an Iraqi-born Swedish member of the European Parliament, cut her hair during a speech at the EU assembly in Strasbourg, France. She did this in solidarity with the anti-government protests in Iran that sparked off after a young woman, Mahsa Amini, died in the custody of Iran’s morality police. Amini was in police custody for flouting hijab laws. Sadly, within a few hours of being arrested, she was declared dead in a hospital; post-mortem reports indicated that injuries to her head caused her death. Since then, women have been protesting across the world, with women taking off and burning their hijabs. Al-Sahlani was elected to the European Parliament in 2019 and has served on the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs since then.
