There were no formal schools in the age of the Mahabharat. Students used to live in gurukuls, where they learned from their gurus. Today, students are only required to study, but in those days, disciples had to do all kinds of chores for the guru. It was up to the guru to decide when their disciples were ready to leave the gurukul.
