Sankranti means passage. This day falls on January 14 (15 in a leap year). On this day, the sun moves from the Dhanu (Sagittarius) rashi (zodiac) to the Makar (Capricorn) rashi. This day is also known as Uttarayan (or the Winter Solstice).
