- More than 100 severe wildfires affected Northern and Central Portugal in September destroying infrastructure, houses and land. Viseu and Aveiro were among the areas most affected in the country.
- Seven people, three of whom were firefighters, lost their lives in the fires and hundreds of others were evacuated from the affected regions.
- Numerous firefighting teams and firefighting aircraft were deployed to tackle the deadly flames. Countries such as Spain, France and Italy also extended support to Portugal.
- According to experts, low humidity levels and high temperatures occurring as a result of climate change are among the main causes of the fires.
- The fires not only destroyed hundreds of hectares of land, but also impacted tourism in the country.
