More than 100 severe wildfires affected Northern and Central Portugal in September destroying infrastructure, houses and land. Viseu and Aveiro were among the areas most affected in the country.
Seven people, three of whom were firefighters, lost their lives in the fires and hundreds of others were evacuated from the affected regions.
Numerous firefighting teams and firefighting aircraft were deployed to tackle the deadly flames. Countries such as Spain, France and Italy also extended support to Portugal.
According to experts, low humidity levels and high temperatures occurring as a result of climate change are among the main causes of the fires.
The fires not only destroyed hundreds of hectares of land, but also impacted tourism in the country.
