Scientists discovered one of the largest deposits of white hydrogen in the world in north-eastern France while drilling the ground to evaluate methane gas levels in the Lorraine mining basin. Between six million to 250 million metric tonnes of white hydrogen, a clean source of energy, was found in the region. White hydrogen is naturally present in the crust of the Earth and is also referred to as ‘geologic’ or ‘gold’ hydrogen. Based on the method used to produce hydrogen or the gas source, it has been categorised using various colours including ‘green’, ‘grey’ and ‘blue’. Scientists consider hydrogen a clean source of energy because it generates only water when burned. As white hydrogen is available in abundance naturally, it can serve as the solution to a variety of environmental problems.
