The World Wide Fund for Nature-India has partnered with eBird and Bird Count India to undertake a vulture census from September 7 to October 6 to safeguard vultures and protect their habitat.
Vultures help the environment by eating the carcasses of animals. This stops diseases from spreading to other creatures. However, the ingestion of poisonous substances, habitat destruction and food shortages have threatened the vulture population in India.
This study will enable conservationists to monitor vultures and study the effects of changing environmental conditions on their habitats. It will also help authorities frame policies and devise conservation plans to protect these scavengers.
This initiative also aims at involving the public including photographers and bird enthusiasts across India in gathering information about different species of vultures.
