Based on new research, the ozone layer may be responsible for weakening one of Earth’s most important cooling mechanisms. According to researchers, the ozone in the lower atmosphere has contributed to warming the Southern Ocean. It is also believed that a third of the warming in the ocean waters bordering Antarctica took place as a result of changes in ozone levels in the upper and lower atmosphere. According to scientists, the ozone layer close to the surface of the Earth has a big impact on the ocean’s ability to absorb excess heat from the atmosphere. Thus, ozone has emerged as a more significant greenhouse gas than what was previously believed and is playing an important role in climate change.

The ozone in the Earth’s stratosphere can absorb around 98% of harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
